ArtCenter’s Richard Shack Gallery | 800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach

The Artist in Residence in Everglades program (AIRIE) and the ArtCenter/South Florida present a conversation with five recent AIRIE fellows. The discussion will focus on the transformative experience of creating art while in residence at the National Park. Moderated by Miami artist and AIRIE president Christy Gast, this lively discussion will take place at the Richard Shack Gallery, 800 Lincoln Road, where the current AIRIE exhibition “Flight: Aloft in the Everglades” is on view through July 6th. This event is free and open to the public.

Flight is an exhibition of new work created by artists who participated in the AIRIE residency at Everglades National Park. The artists in the exhibition each spent a month living and working in the park, immersed in the ecological and cultural concerns of the River of Grass. Their works explore many facets of our cultural experience of nature in this World Heritage Site. In Flight, the Everglades are considered through aerial views of suburban encroachment, birds taking wing, the ethereal nature of wind, and even the stark contrast of nuclear missiles housed deep in the wilderness.

The Everglades National Park Artist in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) program offers artists the opportunity to live and work in this unique environment for a period of up to one month. The works completed under this program will contribute to the public understanding and appreciation of Everglades National Park. It is hoped that these works will characterize the Everglades for present and future generations, giving park visitors and the general public an opportunity to see our heritage through the eyes, and ears of the contributing artists.

The 2015 AIRIE application deadline is on June 15th. The online application can be found at www.airie.org. .

ABOUT AIRIE
South Florida is home to the only subtropical wilderness area in the country, Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) is the only program bringing artists to the Everglades. Since 2001, AIRIE has brought over 100 artists, composers, writers and dancers to Everglades National Park for month-long residencies. AIRIE Fellows have the unique opportunity to get to know the ecology of the Everglades by being immersed in it, and then share their perspective through creative public programs.
