Harumi Abe: I love you before, I love you now, I love you after

Shakkei, a Japanese term describing 17th century borrowed scenery, is the principle for incorporating background landscape into the composition of a garden, found in traditional East Asian garden design.

In this exhibition of abstract paintings, layered landscapes and memories emerge as fresh perspectives on Florida and Japan. Abe paints impressive visual topography of her inner self and sense of belonging to both places. Finding unity in a brilliantly balanced, emotional palette, the artist’s relationship to these prismatic landscapes is magnified by “borrowing” from the regions to create meaningful connections with her beloved homelands.
