AIRIE Art Week 2022
On December 2, AIRIE brought the Everglades to the excitement of Miami Art Week at the inaugural AIRIE Art + Environment Summit. The series of conversations and an immersive installation focused on how artists are engaging diverse audiences in environmental issues and making the outdoors a space of belonging for all.
In partnership with the Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA), the event highlighted artists delving into discussions and narratives of identity, climate activism, and ecological futures through their artistic practices.

Passages
Using projection mapping, video, and audio that envelop an entire room, “Passages” took viewers on a journey through the River of Grass at sunset, as the landscape transforms in the twilight. This exhibition highlighted the passages or connections some of the 2022 AIRIE Fellows found or created in the Everglades, along with the unique histories and stories of this natural landscape. Creative Directed by Cornelius Tulloch, “Passages” features poetry, song, and visual explorations by artists Arsimmer McCoy, Francisco Masó, Kunya Rowley, Ania Freer, Justin Matousek, Alexa Caravia, and Tulloch. Eve Samples, Executive Director of Friends of the Everglades, also offered remarks on the importance of the Everglades, a UNESCO World Heritage site currently listed as "in danger" of disappearing forever. Environmental Futures
The lunch, curated by Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA), brought together national and South Florida women photographers in a reflection of women, photography, and landscape. The lunch was followed by a conversation centering on prominent Black and Latinx women photographers. Panelists responded to the question “How do women photographers imagine environmental futures?” while reflecting on Afrofuturism and the artists’ recent creative work.

Immersion at Everglades National Park
AIRIE and community members celebrated the 75th anniversary of Everglades National Park to connect with nature after a packed Miami Art Week.
December 3rd was a special preview of our new “Passages at the Nest” curated by AIRIE Creative Director Cornelius Tulloch. This exhibition, a continuation of the summit installation, reveals connections that our 2022 AIRIE fellows found or created in the Everglades and celebrates stories of this natural landscape.
Participating artists include Cornelius Tulloch, Arsimmer McCoy, Francisco Masó, Kunya Rowley, M. Carmen Lane, Ania Freer, and Lola Flash.
WOPHA Photowalk at Immersion
Women Photographers International Archive (WOPHA), in partnership with Artist in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE), presented Photowalks in the Everglades National Park, an immersive, bilingual, photography-based walking workshop led by women photographers Clara Toro and Lisette Morales McCabe.

During the morning session participants learned tips and techniques from these experienced photographers and built visual literacy skills by sharing their photographs and comments on Instagram with the hashtags #photowalksatEverglades.
