We’re excited to share that AIRIE will present an installation for the upcoming MAKING HOME—SMITHSONIAN DESIGN TRIENNIAL exhibition, opening November 2 at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. This exhibition will feature 25 new commissions installed throughout the historic Carnegie Mansion.

Contours of the Everglades Exhibition Opening
Join us on Saturday, February 17th at 11am for the opening of AIRIE's exhibition Contours of the Everglades curated by AIRIE Creative Director & 2022 AIRIE fellow Cornelius Tulloch and Operations & Programs Manager, Kristina Reinis. The selected body of work highlights the textures of the Everglades and how even when devoid of color, there is so much to experience in the landscape.

AIRIE Activation: Queen of the Swamp at Green Space Miami
During Art Week, AIRIE Activated Sydney Maubert's second iteration of "Queen of the Swamp" for Green Space Miami's exhibition "DISplace," featuring music by DJ Pressure Point, performance by Arsimmer McCoy, and dance and percussion by Nayah Merisier and artists David, and Lakeria, a group of local Miami artists who all share a love for movement, culture, and rhythm. AIRIE Asks: Pre-Miami Art Week Special
Join us for an exciting special Pre-Miami Art Week AIRIE Asks discussion with AIRIE Fellows Monica Sorelle (filmmaker), T. Elliot Mansa (Visual Artist), and Alejandro Rodriguez (Playwright). The conversation will bring into dialogue how local artists, designers, and community members are preserving Miami’s built and natural environment through creative storytelling. In a community with vulnerable built and natural environments, how are artists and designers using their mediums to help preserve Miami’s cultural and environmental fabric? The 2023 Fellows will also reflect on their time in residency at Everglades National Park and other current projects.

On September 29th, we held an exciting AIRIE Asks live from the AIRIE cabin with September fellow Alejandro Rodriguez, artist, writer, and director. In conversation with curator & cultural worker Zee Lopez Del Carmen and Everglades National Park Rangers, Rodriguez reflected on his time in residency at Everglades National Park. This in-depth and illuminating conversation explored the impact of AIRIE and ENP's partnership, the importance of the Everglades, as well as some work in progress from Rodriguez himself.

Queen of the Swamp with Sydney Maubert + Atéha Bailly
On July 29th, AIRIE held “Queen of the Swamp” a two-part event with June and July AIRIE fellows Sydney Maubert and Atéha Bailly in Everglades National Park. This event began with the opening of Sydney Maubert’s large-scale work “Queen of the Swamp” in the AIRIE Nest Gallery at Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center. Over seventy people came to enjoy the work, which acknowledges Miami's Bahamian history and its vital ties to a larger cultural geography of Southern and Indigenous aesthetics. It draws upon Miami's history of Bahamian laborers' construction of Miami's infrastructure on porous rock, and their present descendants' influence on Miami Bass culture.

On July 25th, we hosted our first AIRIE Asks at Soho House's new Miami Pool House. This discussion featured Sydney Maubert, Artist, Architect, and June 2023 Fellow, and Atéha Bailly, singer-songwriter, producer, and July 2023 Fellow as they reflected on their time in residency at Everglades National Park.
AIRIE Asks: Gal Nissim
On May 29th at the Nest Gallery, we held a very special AIRIE Asks series that was one for the books! Our May Fellow, Gal Nissim, was joined in conversation with John Tigertail. Tigertail is a Miccosukee Community member who owns Tigertail Airboat Tours that also works closely with Love the Everglades Movement, one of our essential community partners.
Earth Day Natural Dyeing Workshop
A special Earth Day for a natural dyeing workshop with artist and AIRIE Indigenous fellow Diana Eusebio. During the workshop, participants learned to create vibrant colors from native plants that can be found in South Florida and in our very own Everglades such as hibiscus flowers, Spanish Moss, avocados, and more!

“Passages at the Nest” Exhibition Opening
The opening of AIRIE's exhibition "Passages at the Nest” Gallery, curated by AIRIE Creative Director and 2022 AIRIE fellow Cornelius Tulloch. This exhibition reveals connections that our 2022 AIRIE fellows found or created in the Everglades and celebrates stories of this natural landscape. Through these passages, artists have created a sense of purpose, place, and lineage. In addition to Tulloch, participating artists include Arsimmer McCoy, Francisco Masó, Kunya Rowley, Lola Flash, M. Carmen Lane, and Ania Freer.

MAYA FREELON - Tissue Sculpture Workshop
This interactive art workshop invited the audience to join artist and educator, Maya Freelon, along with a professional assistant, in a collaborative art-making experience. Using simple instructions and wide parameters, participants of various abilities and ages can join together to help create this new work of art. No experience is necessary, all that’s needed is an open mind and a resilient spirit.
